Garmin have announced the Monterra, an Android powered, WiFi enabled, outdoor GPS.

As it's Android powered, users will have access to the full range of apps available in the Google Play store and they can download apps, access the web, check email and perform other functions that require a data connection wherever they have access to WiFi.

Monterra has a ruggedised, outdoor ready IPX7 rated case, a transreflective LCD display that can be viewed outdoors without backlighting to save power and supports both the supplied Li-ion rechargeable battery pack or AA batteries.

Additional features include a 3-axis compass with accelerometer and gyro, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC and ANT+. An 8-megapixel camera with 1080P HD video capability is also built-in and Monterra shares the same mounting system as the Montana range so can be used with the full range of existing mounts.

This isn't Garmin's first foray into Android powered devices, the short lived Garmin Nüvifone G60 was the result of a partnership with Asus. The Garmin Monterra will be available in Q3 2013 at an RRP of £599.99.
