With China's Beidou satellite navigation network already providing a service to the Asia-Pacific region they now appear to be looking to the smartphone market for further expansion.

In an interview with Xinhua, the Chinese news agency, a scientist with the China Satellite Navigation Office said ""We are seeking favorable policies and attracting investment to promote the technology for public use," he said. "It will not be long before mobile phones adopt the Beidou system."

This is believed to be a hint, aimed at China's smartphone manufacturers, suggesting that they start using Beidou as their primary navigation system.

Beidou now has 16 satellites in orbit with a total of 35 planned before the constellation is complete. CSR already has chipsets that are capable of using signals from Beidou as well as GLONASS (Russia) and GPS.
