AutoBlog UK are reporting that the UK ban on radar and laser detectors (such as the Snooper above) will no longer happen. According to the report Stephen Hammond, the Road Safety Minister, has said that the government "do not plan to ban radar detectors as our general approach is to make speed enforcement visible and fair - encouraging improved driver behaviour and making the roads safer for all." Although it should be noted that we have not been able to find an original source for this quote.

Since 2006 the law has been that ministers could ban the radar detectors without having to go through parliament; while this never actually happened, the lack of clarity surrounding their use was such that large chains such as Halfords removed them from their shelves.

The law is still the same and they could be banned at any time, but we now have a politician's word for it that they won't be banned; and a politician can always be trusted, can't they? Regardless, the current 'official' word is that they are not illegal to use although I do wonder if the police could argue that using one was interfering with their operations just like they do for someone flashing their headlights at a mobile site.
