In a reversal of their usual mode of operation, 'sat-nav' systems will be used to restrict the movement of individuals as criminals are set to become monitored by GPS.
A new law enforcement system will add GPS tracking to electronic tags fitted to criminals serving community punishments and means authorities will know the location of these individuals at all times - technology permitting.
Those who are considered high risk offenders will be monitored constantly by GPS positioning. Some of these offenders are restricted from attending certain events or areas (for instance football matches or pubs) as part of their punishment, but until now there had been few ways of monitoring whether these conditions were adhered to or not.
Under this new system an alert will be sounded if offenders break the conditions of their probation by straying into areas which are deemed as off-limits.
