Despite the fact they were turned off in August 2010, Oxfordshire speed cameras have proven their "worth" by making over £356,000 in prosecutions in a single year.

The cameras flashed 5,911 speeding motorists over the course of the year, taking £356,600 from those prosecuted.

A common site for speeding, Botley Road, was named the most prolific speed camera site for the county where fixed cameras caught a total of 651 drivers gaining £39,060 in penalty charges.

This news follows the county's decision to reinstate speed cameras following a temporary shut-down in August 2010. The cameras were brought back this April after the number of deaths which occurred on the roads increased by 50% following the camera closures.
