A novel 3D Head-Up-Display (HUD) that uses augmented reality has won top prize in this year's European Satellite Navigation Competition.

Eschewing the more common HUD display available on some premium cars, MVS-California uses lasers and a projector to provide route guidance via a 'virtual cable' and can also display POIs and virtual road signs.

The resulting images are focussed at a distance between two meters and infinity to reduce eye strain and can refresh at 60 frames per second.

The designers claim the system is low cost and easily integrated into vehicles. For a vide demonstrating the system in action see here.
