Egypt Removes the Ban on Consumer GPS

pocketgpsworld.comBack in December 2008 we reported that Egyptian Telecomm's rulings did not allow for consumer GPS and hence there was no GPS for the Egyptian iPhone (as well as other phones).

The ban is now being lifted and, according to GPS Business News, they now allow '...the import of cars equipped with GPS and navigation programs...' as well as '...the import of GPS-enabled mobile phones, computers and other devices with civilian applications...'.

As to whether the devices already available in Egypt will be able to have their GPS modules activated via a firmware update is an entirely different matter. Some companies may have physically disabled the GPS module...
