pocketgpsworld.com Broadcom have won their lawsuit against SiRF. The US International Trade Commission has now adjudicated that six patents owned by Braodcom (formerly Global Locate) were infringed by in GPS chipsets manufactured by SiRF.

As a result, the ITC have issued a cease and desist order against SiRF and more interestingly four specific SiRF customers, namely ETen, Mitac, Mio and Pharos preventing them from selling devices containing the affected chip sets.

The Broadcom patents that were subject of this lawsuit concerned the calculation of extended ephemeris data, enhancing sensitivity and GPS time calculation.

Quite how this will affect the companies named in the lawsuit remains to be seen. SiRF has already developed new software that does not contain infringing code and this has been released to customers but this would require any existing unsold stock be updated with this code before sale.
