pocketgpsworld.com Google's Android operating system arrived to mixed reviews a few months back. Available in the UK on T-Mobile's G1 Google Phone, Android is an Open Source Project intended to re-invent the OS and Interface used on mobile technology devices.

And now the Open handset Alliance, the consortium that is behind Google's Android project has welcomed some new entrants into the fold and there are some very big names joining up. ARM (the processor manufacturer), Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Vodafone, Asustek, Huawei Technologies and of particular interest to us, Garmin.

Garmin showcased their nuvifone way back in 2007 and despite surfacing at technology shows and other events it has yet to see a release with Garmin currently quoting Q1 2009 (we remain unconvinced). The converged device market is a cut-throat one and Garmin appear to have recognised, albeit rather late, that the nuvifone needs the Android OS if it ever hopes to compete.

Whilst we failed to see the point of the nuvifone as it was, a nuvifone running Android AND Garmin's navigation software, that is a device I could see proving very popular.
