pocketgpsworld.com The vast majority of "connected" personal navigation devices use some form of GSM data connection (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS) to get their updates, either traffic, or POI search results etc.

It is interesting to see that there are alternatives - namely using the voice channel to transmit data. Airbiquity seems to have a rather large install base (for example OnStar), and may even be coming to Europe. One advantage of Airbiquity is that it doesn't require a particular technology but can work across whatever voice channel is available.
