MapoMatic - A new website to promote OpenStreetMap
Date: Monday, April 07 @ 09:39:45 UTC Topic:
Mapomatic is a new website that has been set up
by a number of GPS enthusiasts to promote the use of OSM (OpenStreetMap) data running on Garmin GPS units.
Although it does not yet compete with the Garmin mapping for SatNav
purposes, it can provide useful maps for the handheld GPS units to
provide better data than the default basemap.
Mapomatic plan to release regular updates of their Garmin maps free of
charge, although a more regular update service will be available for a
small premium (with part of the payment being returned to OSM as a
donation).
The advantages of using OSM data is the more relaxed copyright
associated with the data, and the speed of updates of the map data. As
a wiki-like project, any registered user is able to provide updates to
the map, which are then reflected in the Garmin map Mapomatic produce.
At this time, Mapomatic is beta testing a couple of maps; the beta test
phase is still open to new testers.
