News: Somerset reduce number of fixed cameras

pocketgpsworld.comSomerset's Safety Camera Partnership have announced a reduction in the number of fixed safety cameras deployed across the county.

Following a reduction in the number of speeding offences detected and a fall in casualties, the partnership plans to remove nine of the 26 fixed cameras in coming weeks.

Dick Bowen, manager of the Safety Camera Partnership (Safecam) said: “I believe our on-going driver education programme is paying dividends. There is now a general acceptance that excessive and inappropriate speed is a major factor in many of the crashes on our roads.

The change of emphasis towards education rather than enforcement is to be welcomed but it should not be forgotten that mobile cameras are not affected by this news.
