News: Red Light Programme in the Red
The Arizona Republic reports that Mesa, Arizona is actually losing money from its red light camera initiative.
It's assumed that all other programmes around the world make a sizeable profit, so to suddenly find an area with a deficit is somewhat surprising. Mesa city officials say that despite the shortfall, the safety cameras will remain as they enhance public safety.
The city lost a whopping $390,000 last year and $281,000 the year before.
Reports of fatalities on Mesa's streets have decreased dramatically from 67 fatalities in 2005 to 29 in 2008, though officials don't necessarily link the decline to the cameras. Click here to read more...
