News: Galileo suffers setback

pocketgpsworld.com Giove-B, one of the pair of test satellites for the European satellite navigation network was suffered a setback recently when it was blasted by space radiation.

The radiation caused Giove-B to switch to a safe fallback mode to protect its systems. Esa have now brought the satellite back on-line and are investigating the cause of this malfunction.

Space radiation is not an unexpected phenomenon and so the design would normally take into account such events. Engineers will no doubt be looking closely at why radiation caused the satellite to enter a fall back operational mode.
