So I've decided to buy a GPS unit, and the once I'm thinking about purchasing is http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008DHSS/qid=1089953555/br=1-1/ref=br_lf_e_1//103-9701688-0995044?v=glance&s=electronics&n=559944 - the Magellan SporTrak Color.

The review states, however, to get street level directions (which is what I want in the first place really) that you'll need to buy additional software. Well the Magellan software page (http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/software.asp) has about 8 different products -- which ones will work and do what I need to accomplish?

Or will they all work and it just depends on what I'm looking for? The DirectRoute program says it will let the GPS give audible signals, something I thought the unit did right out the box. Anyone have a clue? Thanks in advance.

Brandon,

In its standard form, the Magellan doesn't give you directions or a route - you have to create them.

They have a product called "MapSend Streets Europe" which gives you street-level detail but not navigation. You can get it to produce a "beep" when approaching a waypoint by using the built-in proximity alert.

You would need the new product they have just recently released (I haven't tried it yet) called "Mapsend Directroute" to make it work more like an in-car GPS. From what I can work out, you would upload the map area you are interested in navigating to the GPS. I some respects this makes the Mapsend street europe obselete if you are only intested in directed navigation.

Hope this is of use!

Mark.
