"That's the way to do it" he said with his best Mr. Punch voice.

Time zones are automatic. The only way I knew I had driven from Spain into Portugal was the Garmin's clock changed!

Speed/distance has to be selected manually.

Ah, OK. Sorry! I'm sure I had something that automatically changed the unit of measurement based on GPS...!!

When driving a new route, especially on t’other side of road, I have a look at it in Google Earth and at any significant turn or junction I preview the scene in Streetview. This gives a mental “flash card” for later and makes everything familiar so much less stressful on the day. I do the same for hotels, car parks etc. On the last motorcycle ride through Spain I even took screenshots and put them on my phone to review over breakfast .... worked a treat

Even the latest European maps can be incomplete/inaccurate.

Following the Garmin in Portugal, it indicated we should turn left at a T junction up ahead. The usual Give way and road markings were all in place. There was little traffic and we turned left.

Then the panic set in. We were on the wrong side of a dual carriageway! And no obvious way to stop and turn round. Fortunately there was a turning to the left which we took.

Later we went back to check the T junction. There was no break in central reservation for turning left and no signs on the approach indicating a dual carriageway or right turn only.

Map error!! Be warned.

Possibly but the road had been upgraded to a dual carriageway and was still shown as single on the map. It must have been recent as the appropriate signage (e.g. no left turn) had not yet been erected.

And of course there's always the one that took someone down a slipway and into the sand. HERE and many similar.

Years ago (at least 5 as I am now on Garmin #2) TomTom put a new junction, flyover and dual carriageway in the mapping for an area in Spain. It still isn't built now!! They did take it out at the next update though!

As has been said many times, especially with illogical routing, always use the Nav as an aid and never follow the suggested route to the letter.

I've had occasions where I've still got over 20 miles to go and it wanted to take me onto a narrow B road. If I'm going into strange territory I do have a check on a map first to get a rough idea.
