I think I will move to Germany where the speed limits will reduce the impact of such big brother legislation although at age 72 I will either be dead or not driving anymore before it has any real effect.
I used to enjoy driving but the kill joys are determined to take all the fun out of it. |

WRT speed limiters. My Honda has an 'Intelligent' mode that reads the speed limit signs and acts accordingly. It does not 'slam on the brakes' when transitioning from one limit to a lower one, but does so pretty gracefully.
The main 'problem' that I have had with mine is the camera misreading the speed limit signs. The most common one is misreading a dirty 30 sign for 80. Not the best result. This is more common with the 'digital' looking overhead gantry signs which it has more problems with than the 'normal' limit and repeater signs. |

Unfortunately not and no warning beep either, just the brakes applied. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

My Honda has an intelligent speed limiter. It's installed in the drivers seat, has 2 legs and arms and reacts in seconds to hazards. _________________ DashCam:

How would they work if you took your car abroad? Are they intelligent enough to convert mph to kmh and adjust accordingly? _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

The other problem with road sign recognition is what happens when the 20's plenty brigade put up their unauthorised 20mph speed limit signs.
The new cars will be slamming on brakes to do 20mph. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

They try to do the conversion but sometimes it takes a while for them to realise that you have come back to the uk. You can end up stuck in kph for a few days when you get back. _________________ Paul |

How long before someone on ebay is selling an 80mph sign to stick in front of the camera on your windscreen? _________________ Paul |

Speed limiters in cars are a "no-go" How long do you think it will be before someone develops a "jammer"? Not a simple jammer that prevents the car from knowing where it is, (which would probably result in a 30mph "limp" mode), but a jamming signal with false co-ordinates that make the system think the car is on a German autobahn, or a country road in the Isle of Man...
Ask Edmund King (AA President) what he thinks of the testing he did that prevented acceleration along a motorway on-slip, when the car thought it was on an adjacent 30mph limit...
If these limiters WERE effective, think of the lost revenue.... Camera vans no longer needed, fixed cameras redundant, and even less Police on the road to catch REAL offences...
Are there ANY intelligent people in Government? |

The only surefire way to reduce speeding is to remove drivers licences when caught breaking the limit by a significant amount. Speed awareness courses are a cop out.
Yes we all drift over the limit from time to time but those who are caught say 10mph over the limit, licence removed for 2 to 5 years. If subsequently caught whilst banned then it's 10 years extra for each conviction.
No if's, no but's, none of this nonsense when drivers are still on the road with over 12 points due to 'circumstances '. _________________ DashCam:

Attach a selfie-stick to your bonnet with a 60mph sign attached. Then your car will always et you do 60 |

Just as well you are not in charge of road safety then, as you will not get my vote.
I think the existing 10% +9mph for a speed awareness course is still a good thing.
But, it does send the message that speeding is just a revenue source, as you can do up to 75mph in a 60 limit, and if caught you can pay £95 or whatever for a course once every 3 years.
Careless and dangerous driving offences are difficult and costly to prove as there are no Police. Speeding is an easy revenue source, and it makes the Police prosecution stats look good on paper. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

Speeding is also one of the fatal four ... so no excuse really, and as K implies the penalties need to be higher. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
