France is set to massively increase the presence of it's new generation of speed cameras.

The speed cameras monitor the traffic as normal, and when they detect a motorist speeding or jumping a red light, a cross check on their registration number is carried out with a national vehicle insurance database.

It has been reported that up to 1,2000 of the new cameras will be installed by the end of 2019, that is three times the initial projection.

"Yellow vest" protesters have been vandalising the existing speed cameras. They destroyed hundreds of speed cameras (60% of the country's total number of devices) in protest at, among other things, new speed limits - the French government lowered the speed limit on the country's B-roads.

The newer devices are harder to damage.

A Road Safety spokesman told Le Parisien: "The speed cameras are painted, hammered or wrapped in something but 5 to 7 days after the damage report has been filed, they get fixed. For every speed camera that is damaged beyond repair we replace it with a newer speed camera."

He added: "So far we have installed 150 to 200 of these new models. Our goal is to install 400 to 450 by the end of 2019, and 1,200 by the end of 2020."

There will be 4 decoy cameras for every one that is live and they will be switched regularly so that drivers don't discover which is which.

So France is at it again. Once upon a time you needed yellow headlights, then we had the breathalysers, on motorcycles we had police fining riders who had no reflective tape on helmets. Then they took all the warnings off their speed cameras therefore admitting they wanted the money, not driver's slowing down. Now we have official dummy cameras which will again generate income not safety. Add all this to very expensive toll roads and that's why our regular trips over the channel always turn left at Calais and make for the Belgian border. Then south via Germany and Austria.

Yellow headlamps make sense as you get better visibility in rain and fog. This is why foglamps over here used to be yellow - some of us may remember those.

And now we get pretentious idiots driving around in all weathers, even on a perfectly clear day or night, with fog lamps blazing. It's not clever, and actually illegal. And I'm not mistaking fog lamps for driving lights either.

Interesting what glenjarnold stated. Fog lights actually improve your local peripheral visions. I use mine on unlit roads often and they do help, I thought that is what extra lighting is for improving vision. Trust me I'm a lighting engineer Very Happy

They may but they're still illegal unless conditions dictate. If we could simply use whatever lights we wanted we'd be dazzled all the time, I can see better with my high beams on Rolling Eyes

I wouldn't encourage other people to break the law in this way. The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 state in rule 27 that no person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road any vehicle on which any ... Front fog lamp ... be lit at any time other than in conditions of seriously reduced visibility.

Only French registered vehicle needed yellow lights visiting vehicles did not.

Breathalysers never got off the ground.

Speed camera warning signs were reinstated almost immediately after they were declared redundant. Every camera has a warning sign on approach.

Dummy cameras will never generate any income!.

Toll roads are a choice not compulsory.

Like it or not speed limits and cameras, and in particular average speed cameras, will proliferate owing to those who cannot, or will not, conform.

Sorry don't understand that.

Speeding motorists are a real problem in France, with "risky behaviour" said to be a key problem in France's 3,500 road death toll in 2015. They had three consecutive years of rising death tolls between 2014 and 2016 - an unprecedented spike since 1972, followed by a plateau in 2017.
After falling to a historic low in 2018, road deaths in France increased again.
New figures released in March 2019 revealed that 253 people were killed on the roads in France in February, a 17.1 percent increase on the same time last year.
There was also a sharp rise in the number of injury crashes (up 22.3 percent to 4,091) and people injured on the roads (up 21.5 percent to 5,021).

The UK is less dangerous, with 3.1 vs 5.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2016. 5.7 vs 8.4 deaths per 100,000 vehicles. 3.4 vs 5.8 deaths per 1bn vehicle-km travelled. 2019 vs 3585 total road deaths.

We needed yellow headlights when I went across with my parents in the 70s, but by the time I drove my own car there in the early eighties, we only needed deflection tape to stop the lights dipping left.
Breathalyser/alcohol test – As of January 2013 the French government announced that the introduction of an €11 fine for not carrying one had been postponed indefinitely.

The one thing you have right is In France, motorcyclists and their passengers are required by law to wear safety helmets with reflective elements. Make sure to fit reflective stickers before travelling - one on the front, one at the back and one on each side - if your helmet is without reflectors.

The warning signs were removed only for a while. By 2017 they were replacing existing signs with more obvious ones, and more of them.
Dummy cameras can only help safety not income!
Toll roads are how they pay for better roads - and they are significantly quieter than our overcrowded motorways. French-registered private vehicles no longer require a road tax certificate, but it costs them to drive on nice roads.
Prices are comparative. The M6 is 43km long and costs £6.70 for a car. Calais to Bethune includes 41km of peage and costs 6 Euro 30. The cost varies, but averages out at about €1 for every ten miles travelled.

You forgot
SPEED CAMERA WARNING DEVICES These have been banned in France since 2011. Drivers using radar detectors (speed camera detectors) are liable for a fine of 1500 Euros and 6 points off their licence.

Back in the good old days, you'd buy a pair of yellow plastic covers for your headlights - looked like big yellow saucers. However, in both 1969 and 1971 I drove all over with just the deflector tape, no yellow conversion.

My 1970s Renault 4 had adjustable headlights, just reach inside and turn the mounting to convert to right dip.

My MG has something similar, although you have to be a contortionist to use the lever. It doesn't convert to right dip, but flattens out the beam and blocks the left dip.
