Birmingham authorities say they want 20mph speed limit across the city's residential streets.

The council says that there should be a lower limit on the vast majority of its roads and extra speed cameras would be introduced to police it.

A council spokeswoman commented: "The idea about a default 20mph speed limit, if it is something we are going to roll out, it would make a great deal of sense to look at doing it in a different way. We have to provide signage, put repeater signs up for 20mph speed limits.

If we end up with 90 per cent of the roads in the city with 20mph speed limits that is an awful lot of signs. It would make a lot more sense if we could just have 20mph as the default speed limit. We would only then need to have signs for 30 and above but that would require some legislative changes and support from the government to do so."

Indeed, 20mph default would be the right way to go. IMO there can be confusion right now over what speed limit is in force. At present, the default is 30mph, so if in doubt, stay below 30. The same would aply with a 20mph default.

Well I hope that the Government tell them to poke of and don't be so silly. In Brighton where the local tree hugging ayatollahs have imposed 20MPH limits, the accident rate is reported to have risen, not fallen.
But I doubt it [sigh], don't let the facts get in the way of a good law which raises more money in speeding fines, increases pollution, costs a fortune to implement and generally p.i.s.s.e.s off loads of motorists. Rolling Eyes
