Dozens of new, supposedly vandal-proof speed cameras in France have been put out of use by supporters of the country's “yellow vest” revolt.

Almost three quarters of France's existing speed cameras have been trashed recently, so the French government took the opportunity to replace them with what they say are more efficient devices.

The plan was to catch a whole lot more drivers than they could ever do so before.

The devices can monitor eight lanes of traffic, and although to begin with they will record only speed, they have the capability to catch drivers not wearing seat belts or using mobile phones.

Additionally, they can spot motorists jumping red lights, illegal overtaking, tailgating and driving in a prohibited lane.

They're positioned on 10 foot pylons and are reportedly better able to withstand vandalism.

Out of the 450 that were due to be installed by the end of 2019, dozens have already been damaged over the last two months.

The head of French government’s road safety commented: "Those responsible for these acts of vandalism will have deaths on their conscience because without them motorists tend to drive faster, which mathematically causes more accidents."

Those caught can expect of up to five years in prison and a €100,000 fine.
