Speeding offences in Northern Ireland have increased by over 30% in the previous year - there were 40,969 offences clocked in 2018.

Just one stretch, Upper Newtownards Road in east Belfast, claimed 2,500 of that figure - the road is monitored by a fixed speed camera.

Staffing issues were said to account for the lower figure in 2017 - the six years prior to 2017 saw the number of speeding offences range from 41,761 to 48,423.

A police spokesperson said: "Tragically, 24 people have already lost their lives on our roads this year. Everyone should stop and think about this figure for a moment. Every time you hear about a fatal or serious collision on the news, there is a family, a circle of friends, a community plunged into mourning. There are many other people across the country who are having to learn how to cope with life-changing injuries after being involved in serious collisions."

They added: "This is why it is critically important to remind all drivers that there are consequences to breaking the speed limit and driving in a manner that does not consider the safety of all road users. Police will continue to enforce the law and are determined to make Northern Ireland's roads safer. If everyone slowed down, did not drive after drinking or taking drugs, wore a seatbelt and drove with greater care and attention then together we can save lives on our roads."

Eight mobile speed camera vans operate seven days a week across Northern Ireland at more than 80 sites.

What they are saying is that more people are being caught. They are not saying that more people are speeding than were before. With the increase in cameras everywhere, I would guess that the number of offences recorded have probably increased everywhere. It'll take some time before people cotton on to the fact that you can't get away with blasting around the country at any old speed any more and get away with it.
