It has been revealed that the speed cameras on Northern England's M60 and M62 new 'Smart Motorways' are not switched on.

The £208million initiative was supposed to be live since July 31st, yet four months later they are still laying dormant.

A Highways England spokesperson commented: "We needed to carry out work to calibrate the cameras with the new road layout once the smart motorway scheme was finished earlier this year, and police officers needed to carry out a high-speed test along the route to check that the cameras were operating properly."

They added: "This work has now been completed and we understand that Greater Manchester Police expects to be able to start using the cameras to enforce the speed limit shortly."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Once the commissioning has been completed we'll be able to start processing offences caught on camera and we are working closely with partners to ensure this happens as soon as possible."

"This doesn't mean however that there are not other ways you can be caught speeding in these areas. Officers continue to patrol the motorway network and deal with speeding motorists as part of daily business. They can be in marked or unmarked vehicles and work around the clock 365 days a year."

A smart motorway is a section of motorway that uses active traffic management to increase capacity by use of variable speed limits and hard shoulder running at busy times. Benefits include smoother traffic flow, more reliable journey times, fewer road traffic collisions, and reduced noise and harmful vehicle emissions.

Considering the implications of no hard shoulder why do the highways agency publicise that the cameras don't work !
