Average speed cameras are to be installed after thousands of people signed a petition calling for safety measures on the A4540 in Birmingham.

The petition followed the tragic death of six people in a 100mph crash when a driver, who had cannabis in his system, crashed into a taxi. Each car had three passengers travelling in it.

Birmingham City Council will now erect the point-to-point cameras along a 1.7 mile (2.8km) stretch of the road. The system is due to go live by the autumn

The leader of Birmingham City Council commented: "Given the long and complex nature of the resulting police investigation, it was important that we understood what had contributed to this truly heartbreaking loss of six lives before considering what safety measures could be put in place."

A spokesman for the local police said: "We welcome the introduction of any measures that improve safety on our roads."

And average speed cameras would have avoided this how??

The driver was intoxicated on drugs and driving at 100+ MPH Speed cameras would not have changed his behaviour. Why are speed cameras then suggested as a solution?

Incredible. Just an excuse to put up what is likely to be a moneymaking camera.

The cameras will make no money if you don't exceed the legal speed limit.
What's the problem with enforcing the law?

Absolutely nothing.
You seem to have totally missed the point made by exportman and me, insofar as a speed camera would not have prevented the 6 deaths that they are using as a 'reason' to install cameras.

I think you're wrong.
As the peoplpe who caused the accident had just been released from prison after serving a sentence for dangerous driving, speed cameras may well have slowed him down and saved six lives.
Knowing that there are too few cameras enables wreckless maniacs to break the law knowing that they are unlikely to get caught.
If he had been caught speeding and NOT killed people, and with his previous record, the courts would hopefully have handed another, longer custodial sentence and the families of the dead would not be grieving.

Your assertion that these cameras are being installed simply to make money is cynical, at best.

I suggest that you read and understand exportman's post once again.
Putting up speed cameras is unlikely to change the driving habits of people who are off their heads on drugs and speed at 100+MPH.

And it's not me being cynical, it's the people who use the slightest excuse to erect cams and use one accident, caused by a driver with a record of dangerous driving (ref. your post), which unfortunately killed 6 people, as the reason.
Had they said that there was long established data of excess speed causing multiple accidents, however major or minor on that road, the reason would have been far more acceptable, and I would have been far less likely to comment.

Where there is no, or minimal evidence of excess speed causing or being a major contributory factor to an accident as is often the case, there can be only one reason for installation of cameras, and that's the revenue raised from fines, or more likely, speed awareness courses.

I agree that cameras will not stop the drink and drug mob, but, I seem to recall, at the time, locals saying that the road was an accident waiting to happen as speeding is commonplace.

Maybe the cameras are to help stop the general speeding this road suffers.

Probably, but it seems that six being killed makes for better headlines. Rolling Eyes

If you strip out the drunk / drugged and illegal drivers then you find 'speed camera' enforcement has never had and never will have any impact on road KSI figures. The reason for that is that the above are the ones that cause death and destruction and marginally exceeding the number on a sign has zero effect.

No-one being sent on these SAC's is turning up in the stats and there is no proof that having been liberated of their £100 they are any less likely to have an accident. Maybe less likely to make the mistake of being caught again (lower the speed limit eh - that'll sort those pesky UK citizens who drive perfectly safely and who still have some cash in their pocket).

It's hateful corrupted system that actually undermines 'road safety'.
