Now you are just sitting on the fence suss. Too fast AND too close. No, it must be one or the other, not both.

The 'too fast' argument is just stupid. If you drive slower than the car in front, you will keep on increasing the distance between you and the car.
The object of the exercise on the majority of roads is to keep up with the traffic flow by maintaining approximately the same speed as the car in front (whatever speed that is, be it 20 MPH or 70 MPH.) But, you must maintain an adequate DISTANCE between your car and the car in front, so that you can stop before using the rear of his car as a brake if he reduces speed/ stops suddenly.
So Bollox. The answer is DISTANCE. Or is it 42.

That's why you're both wrong ... And both right.

You could say they were too close regardless of speed ... Or at the correct distance but going too fast ... So when the first car braked they couldn't stop in time Wink

Note the word distance. There is absolutely no mention of speed at all.
Hoisted by your own petard I think suss

That's achieved though by adjusting your speed as necessary ... Rolling Eyes

Plus you need to be alert or the distance you create is enough for some wag to try and get into.

Roadcraft to me is staying safe and causing issues for the ignorant/selfish ones who always try and be the one in front, not maintaining their order in the procession. Very Happy

I remember one police driving instructor saying to me that it can all be summed up in one phrase, drive with space around you .... enough so you can cope with anything that happens.

Absolutely correct, but having 'adjusted your speed as necessary' to increase the gap to a 'safe' distance, you then have to resume your original speed to maintain that safe distance. So, you see, speed is irrelevant providing you do not decrease the 'safe' distance for the prevailing conditions.

I'm getting bored with this. Shocked

Well you and I don't disagree on most of that, although you wouldn't be resuming your original speed but rather maintaining the speed you're now at to maintain that distance, but unless nothing changes it's then a constant adjustment of speed to adjust the distance as traffic around you changes speed Wink

I'm bored too Laughing
