Just one road's average speed cameras have captured almost 10,000 drivers since they were activated last November.
The speed cameras, on the B6232 Grane Road Haslingden, are positioned on one of Lancashire’s most dangerous roads - there has been 118 accidents on the road in less than 10 years.
A spokesperson for Lancashire police said: "It was hoped the numbers would decrease as they have on other average speed routes where compliance has been very high. We will continue to monitor the situation and take additional action where necessary to make this road safer."
The point-to-point cameras cover both a 50mph and 30mph limit and could amass close to a million pounds in fines.
The spokesperson added: "All monies from Fixed Penalties are collected by Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service on behalf of the Treasury with no direct return to Police Forces or Road Safety Partnerships. Motorists can only accept a fixed penalty if they admit being the driver at the time of the alleged offence although, if eligible, they may instead complete a speed awareness course or, of course, challenge the evidence at court."
Many drivers are still unsure as to how these types of camera works For those that don't know, they work by using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) which records the vehicle's number plate at each camera position. Using the distance between positions, the average speed can be calculated by the time taken to travel between two cameras.

So the fines aren't causing drivers to slow down, or are they different drivers on this busy road. _________________ Satnav:

Specs cameras seem to fool every one, the 50s seem to be okay and it's a sensible speed if it's for road works etc too, but there is a long section on the M1 which 30mph and a real PITA as you change up and down the box so much, plus you get the idiots who cut you up going from lane to lane unaware they are in a specs zone, some drivers are mind blowingly dumb.
