My old faithful TomTom GO 750 LIVE is starting to play up.

For the last couple of days the screen is very sluggish to redraw when moving and road junctions and roundabouts are a nightmare as it takes ages to respond to the change in direction.

The audio commands 'seem' OK but trying to find an address in Antwerp yesterday was a real naus and we went wrong so many times (because of the time lag) that I nearly threw it into the canal!!

I know touch screens are much more responsive these days but I find I really have to stab the screen to get a response then it seems to cache the prods and respond to them one by one in a very laboured way.

Is it the end of the road for the 750 or is there a workaround?

If it is the end of the road, is the newer TOMTOM GO 5200 similar in that I can add my own POIs and use Itinerary Planning. This second option is a MUST?

Any advice or help would be brilliant

Many thanks

Barry

Have you tried a drum reset by holding the power button about 20 seconds till you hear the drum sounds?

(unless that model has a dedicated reset hole)

I am nowhere near as knowledgeable as most here, but, have been using tomtoms since 2006

In your situation I would do and have done

Use windows file error checker

With your tomtom connected to your pc, right click, properties, tools,

Defrag your tomtom with Smart defrag, get the free version

Download and use the rfee tomtom clear flash tool

A link to that does more than it says

iirc correctly its best to run it three times See Here

Yes, clearflash.exe should be run 3 times allowing the device to reboot after each run....or you could maybe try to reduce the number of POI's showing as that does slow things down considerably

I’ve never heard of this before. Many thanks, I’ll give it a go.

To date it’s always worked well and I haven’t made any changes for ages except updating the map and adding different itinerary planning routes.

I suddenly noticed the extreme sluggishness to respond to screen inputs and redrawing of the map. I don’t think it was the GPS reception as even trying to select menu options was painfully slow.

Many thanks for the feedback

Barry

It is generally agreed that it is unwise to Defrag a Solid State Memory Device (the excessive read/writes can shorten the life of the device), as it doesn't have the latency that a spinning magnetic disk does.

As I have mentioned on at least two occasions, even stationary, the screen is very slow to respond to instructions from me finger. I will however try the clear flash thing to see if it helps.
