Not universal with Nougat because it stays alive on my HTC One m9

Have you checked Nougats new 'optimise' settings as that could be shutting it down. If you have a HTC then check Boost+ as that does a similar trick of shutting apps it thinks aren't open/running.

I know Norton had to update it's Android app because Nougat optimise was shutting it down = oops.

Are you running it in the foreground or background?

I believe Android v7 introduced an OS level powersave which is similar to that in iOS and causes background apps to sleep, so as M8TJT asks...

I have a OnePlus 6 running Android Pie. I have unoptimised Camera Alert and have 4GB free memory but the app stops running after 5 - 10 minutes meaning it's basically useless. There is a warning when installing the app that it's not optimised for Android Pie and may not run properly! The app needs to be updated so it's fully supported for Pie and doesn't get stopped by Android

CamerAlert shows as 'EXEMPTED' and is not selectable on my OnePlus 5 (Pie).

However, I generally have it in the foreground with Google Maps overlaid in the corner.
