Belgium has just introduced speed cameras hidden in wheelie bins to their roads.

The city of Ghent placed the first of the cameras at the symbolic location of a tragic accident. The spot where where two girls died after being hit by a speeding drunk-driver sixteen years ago.

The device uses infrared technology, does not need human operation and can cover two-way traffic - three lanes each way.

A spokesman for the manufacturers commented: "One picture is sufficient, because it can be cloned and the information for each vehicle stays available." He added that the concealed devices were: "A nightmare for the speeder".

The cameras, which cost approximately 50,000 EUR (£42,000) each, can also be used in cars or vans.

There are plans to introduce the camera in other Western European countries, but which ones were not specified.

Probably Germany as 30 years ago they were setting up cars on the side of the road with cameras in and Police stopping you 100 metres down the road. Spain likes their hidden cameras too, so would suspect they will also be in the market. Are they will come to UK though as yellow wheelie bins would look amusing Smile

Green = Recyling rubbish
Brown = Garden waste

Going down the M62 at 90mph the other day a wheelie bin came behind me, flashed its green lights and pulled me over.

I thought this was about people putting them out too quickly until I read the article.

Blasted local authorities, not just content to police the contents but now the speed they are wheeled onto the pavement.

In Liverpool, the Wirral, the bin men are so awkward that you follow their rules or your wheelie stays full.

On collection day, wheelies must be presented in pairs, at the edge of the kerb, with the handle side facing the street.

If not they don't touch them.
