Average speed cameras are to be installed to both the north and south of market town Retford, Nottinghamshire.

Seven pairs of cameras will cover two stretches on the A638, one between Markham Moor and Grove Road and the other between Randall Way and Station Road.

Notts County Council say that the new installations are a response to regular serious and fatal crashes on the road - 33 reported injuries which included ten casualties killed or seriously injured (KSIs). Fatal crashes claimed the lives of three teenagers on the A638 in just five months - two 18 year olds and one 15.

A spokesman said: "In order to address this accident problem and encourage safer speeds we have reduced the speed limit to 50mph along the two lengths. We are now introducing average speed safety cameras as part of a two-stage strategy to address the accident problem."

He added: "This approach will ensure that consistently lower vehicle speeds are achieved along the length of the A638."

The council claims that on average across the county there's been an 80% reduction in KSIs in areas covered by average speed cameras.

The cost of installation will be £450,000 and the cameras should be operational in early January.

Bedford can beat that with 12 sets already working and more to come.

As most of these will affect only local motorists the income will drop off rapidly as drivers become aware and only the occasional out-of-towner will get caught.

Income is not the objective. Read the linked article.
