I have had my Tom Tom stolen from my car on my lit drive having followed all the advice, out of sight, no windscreen sings of sat nav and locked car.
Having looked into what Tom Tom will do to help the answer was nothing - other than sell me another one.
With current devices linked to them via Lifetime updates they could disable any stolen device when it is connected.
They could also establish the location of the device if used to get realtime traffic reports via a mobile phone
But after taking our hard earned cash they decide to do nothing, some customer care there.

I am starting an e petition to try to get tem to do more, this will lead to thefts being unprofitable to the thief, reduce Police time dealing with such crimes and hopefully lead to arrests and convictions if they locate the thieving toe rags that nicked them
Please visit the link below to the petition and support it - it may be you next!!!

While it's unfortunate I don't see how TT or any other GPS manufacturer could do what you're suggesting. There's no 'link' as such to a satnav to enable a manufacturer to disable it. The best you could ask, and I assume TT have done it, is to ensure it's now deleted as a device on its database so it cannot be updated?

While technically devices could be altered in future the cost would be substantial, and I'd rather be responsible for the security of mine rather than shell out to protect a few who are a tad lax.

I'm not at all sure that the OP has been lax, given a theft on his own lit drive from a locked car. Given that TT can identify who is entitled to download map updates, perhaps they should force a blank download down to any others (to remove their mapping)..I don't know.

I agree.

Mobile phones can be disabled once their EMEI is reported as stolen. I'm sure SatNav's could also be zapped once any form of upgrade is attempted.

I think it's a "Put it down to experience" situation.

On my driveway under the streetlight lit all night in those days, I had my side window busted and the van ransacked and all they got was a torch and my brass band CDs, because I didn't leave my satnavs in there. I think that's the one part of "having followed all the advice" that the OP missed.

In this day and age, it seems impossible to stop them breaking in, so just don't let them get anything out of it. Crying or Very sad

As Dennis points out, he left it in his car Wink
