If you planned to use CamerAlert on your iOS device then be quick and download it ASAP.

Apple have decided that because speed camera detection is illegal in some countries where our app is available that they are removing it from sale in every country.

We are obviously fighting this, but they are not being very forthcoming with information about which countries we can't offer it for or if we can even restore it later just for the UK...

So, there's your warning :/

So is Apple going to also remove the TomTom (and other) Sat Nav apps which also contain Speed Camera databases?

Are Apple horribly confused between "detectors" and "passive database"??

Pfffff

Mobile contract has six months to go. Might have to look down the Android route.

Good question :/ We honestly don't know. It's hard enough us trying to find things out and we pay them for the 'privilege'...

I'm no great fan of Apple, never have been, even though I do have a couple of Mac laptops - or do I have to call them MacBooks?

Anyway back to topic. Wonder if the country cousins will kick up a stink about this. I'm assuming that quite a few Apple phones are sold in the US, if all the users of the PGPSW database over there complained it may cause a rethink. Then again, probably not.

Wish you guys the best of luck.

Is there any way for people to load CamerAlert onto their iOS devices without using iTunes?

As an aside, if Apple are going to lump all countries together into one global one, then why do US accounts of iTunes have access to different TV series etc that UK accounts of iTunes have access to? Confused Rolling Eyes

Regards,

Surely, in the countries that we know about it's not only detectors, but also passive databases that are 'illegal'

Perhaps it's because we include data for those countries in which even 'passive databases' specifically locating the position of speed cams are illegal

Point 1. Have you asked them which countries and offered to exclude that data from downloads (France, Switzerland)?

Point 2. I am VERY, VERY, VERY annoyed at this. Almost exactly 4 years ago I bought my first iPhone, specifically in order to be able to use CamerAlert - I read the manual first and decided that it (CA) had been written by somebody who not only knew how to write programs or whatever, but also knew how to write a program for speed cameras. When I got it, I patted myself on the back for my good judgement. I subsequently discovered that the iPhone was pretty good and I came to sort of love it. It goes very nicely with my iMac, MacBook and iPad. So I almost went and bought the latest iPhone 5S to replace my iPhone 5 today. But not now.

So, when shall we learn if Apple will indeed carry out this withdrawal?

So, what Android phone do I need? I really dislike the sound of Android - it's sort of artificial, plastic, Science Fiction, nasty. I shall need one that does what I get from my iPhone - it somehow magically determined the settings for my several email thingies, it helps with typing, does emails, and texts on the fly and looks at websites with a browser. What else? I dunno (but deal breaker is CamerAlert). But cheap isn't part of the equation, I don't want it to not only sound all the above dislikes, but not also cheap to boot. Oh and it sets alarms and wakes me up when I ask it to. Funny, the two things I've got Siri to do successfully is set alarms, then the other day I asked "What's the Man United score?" and it actually told me!! (I didn't care about the MU score, just wanted to impress the grandchildren with my techno blah, blah. But it failed with Scunthorpe Very Happy ).

Do you think a change of name and removal of the term "Speed Camera Warning System" from the app might mollify Apple?

Does this mean we won't be able to update the database after removal from the Apple Store or is that a direct update with PGPSW?

Will the app be allowed to remain on our devices or will they automatically remove it when updating one day?

Sorry if stupid questions, I'm sure I'm not the only one Smile

Nope, sensible questions. Which are actually answered in today's newsletter!

If they go ahead: It will only be removed from sale - it will NOT be removed your devices or itunes. Anyone who already has it will still have it. The database updates are through our servers so that will not be affected.
