A new breed of harder-to-spot speed camera is poised to be introduced to motorways around the UK.

American company Redflex Travel Systems has secured a £2.1 million Government contract to install the grey cameras at various points along the M1, M25, M3, M60 and M6, the Daily Mail has reported.

The first operational set has already collared some 700 drivers in its first two-month.

And many more are expected to be caught driving above the 70mph limit due to the fact the cameras are much harder to notice than their traditional yellow counterparts.

There are no grey cameras in Leicestershire, however, there are plans to install one at junction 28 of the M1, near Alfreton.

Who says cameras are a deterrent

I think the answer on motorways is to stay at 70 or under. You often get to your destination just as quick and usually a lot more composed.

Isn't that the principle behind 'managed motorways'?

There's a similar article here.

I think the important passage is this:

Quote:
The first victims of the ‘stealth cameras’ were driving on a section of the M25 in Kent where 668 motorists were caught in just three months since they were switched on. Of those, 520 offenders received tickets where the limit was set at exactly 70mph.

Now, the 70mph crackdown is set to be rolled out to other ‘smart motorways’, including those in the Midlands.

Most motorists believe they are allowed a margin of grace by the police of 10 per cent, plus 2mph, over any speed limit.

It seems to me that they are using the new cameras as an excuse to change the policy, and also effectively reduce the speed limits on motorways to 65mph. Who is going to risk driving at 70mph now, when a momentary lapse of concentration (or cruise control!) might take one's speed marginally higher just at the point of passing a camera?
