Speeding fines issued by the courts across England and Wales have hit a four year high.

It is thought that the rise is due to the proliferation of new digital cameras. The old wet film cameras needed to have the film collected and developed which meant that many speed cameras were left inoperative for long periods of times. Digital technology is able to monitor traffic 24 hours a day.

According to the Ministry of Justice, over 115,000 speeding drivers were fined in England and Wales last year. This is the highest figure since 2009.

South Wales saw one of the biggest increases with 6,491 drivers fined, up from 2,181 three years earlier.

Even though the London Metropolitan Police area witnessed most drivers being fined in England and Wales in 2013 (7,736), it is the city's lowest count in five years.

Edmund King of the AA told the Telegraph newspaper: "It (the rise in speeding fines) is a reflection that cameras are more efficient than ever. In the past, cameras in London would only take valid pictures for a quarter of day and it was pot luck whether you are fined. The cameras are now working 24 hours a day."

The number of speeding fines in Essex, rose by 44 per cent in 2013 to 3,091, while Avon and Somerset saw the number rise by 34 per cent to 3,925.

A total of 452,540 speeding fines have been issued by magistrates over the past 4 years, bringing in more than £45 million in fines.

The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points added to your licence and you could be disqualified from driving if you build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of 3 years.

Maximum fines are £1,000 for speeding on a dual carriageway and £2,500 for exceeding the motorway 70mph limit.
