The Conservative parliamentary candidate for Somerton and Frome has persuaded the UK Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin to meet the bosses of the UK's Satnav companies in a bid to stop HGVs driving through his county's rural villages.

David Warburton lobbied McLoughlin for over a year about his concerns that large trucks were unsuited to travel through Somerset's quieter areas.

He said: "I was determined to bring this issue to the attention of the Department of Transport, and I'm delighted that the Transport Secretary himself has made it a priority to sit down with satnav companies and find a solution. HGV satnavs ought to be made to keep such large vehicles to main arterial routes only, and always avoiding short cuts through small villages and towns."

The Minister responded by saying: "HGV traffic running through rural villages can be a real blight for residents. Frequently the roads are not made for such large vehicles which can cause damage as well as unwanted noise. David Warburton has raised this issue with me, particularly the impact on Somerset villages."

He continued: "As a rural MP, I can empathise with residents. The problem is often compounded by satnav systems. I want to see the UK satnav companies do more to ensure HGVs are not a menace in quiet communities. To that end I am inviting the companies to a meeting so I can ask them what they are doing to stop this nightmare."

But as long as HGV drivers keep using the much cheaper car satnavs, the problem will continue. So what's new?

Hgvs don't actually use them as a short cut they usually have to use then because a farmer has ordered 30 tonnes of whatever for his far or there's a small furniture company in the middle of nowhere ( it's more common than you think). And then there's the store deliveries to the local shops. What would happen if these deliveries stopped.

The use of this guy saying there being used for a short cut is nonsense there's very few roads in summerset that aren't rural these have to be used to get between town and villages.

Whether the driver uses a car nav or truck nav between towns they usually route the same unless there's a low bridge or weight limit

Looks like another clueless mp that hasn't a clue how the UK delivery system works. Unless councils put weight limits in there's not much satnav companies can do
