Thirty two new speed cameras covering the M60 and M62 have been doing their job since they were installed over the last three weeks - but only up to a point.

Although fully operational, none of the hundreds of motorists who have been caught by the average speed cameras will be prosecuted.

There is a dispute over the fine print on the related paperwork between the Highways Agency and Greater Manchester Police. The police say that the Highways Agency have failed to obtain the correct traffic regulation order which govern the speed limits.

The Highways Agency commented: "Greater Manchester Police, who are responsible for enforcement on the scheme, have requested that we make minor revisions to the wording of the temporary traffic regulation order for the M60/M62 to make sure it fully meets their requirements. We urge drivers to be responsible and to adhere to the speed limit which has been put in place for their own safety and that of our workforce".

The route, which is being turned into a "smart motorway", is also being monitored by 130 CCTV cameras.

A further sixteen cameras are expected to be installed in the near future and all speed cameras will remain in place until the upgrade is completed in 2017. The CCTV cameras will be a permanent feature.
