Fewer Speed Camera Fines Despite Police Predictions

There has been a marked reduction in speeding fines since fixed speed cameras were deactivated across the West Midlands in March 2013 in an attempt to save one million pounds a year.

You may think the reduction is obvious, but the police at the time predicted more speeders would be caught as operations would focus more on the use mobile digital cameras.

It turns out, according to a response from a Freedom of Information request, that nearly 15,000 fewer speeding fines were issued in the following 12 months. Figures were down from 72,000 to 57,000.

It was originally believed that mobile sites would be more effective, but the area's new Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson, has now backed the return of the fixed cameras.

He said that there was a "great demand" from residents for the cameras.

A spokesman for the road safety charity Brake commented "Fixed cameras catch far higher numbers of speeding drivers than traffic police with mobile cameras, and at much lower cost, freeing up police for other important duties".

At £60 a throw, they gave up £900,000. I wonder how many plods that would finance? (Or indeed, how many Police and Crime Commissioners).

Its simple, "they" make more money with the cameras ON.

The figures support this and there is no way they can spin it any other way!

Simple economics, absolutely nothing to do with safety its all about making money!

Plain and simple!

Lets also acknowledge, if these camera vans were parked on 20mph zones (ie. schools) the figures would have been even smaller, but these figures were broadly from dual carriageways where they stood half a chance to catch someone exceeding the speed!

But I wonder what has happened to the accident and KSI figures. Surely these should be the numbers that they should be using to justify (or not) the re-introduction of the fixed speed cams, not the loss of revenue.
