GPS world coverage

Not sure whether this is the right section to ask this qusetion, still here goes.

Yesterday I was visting friends who had just returned from a trip to Tierra del Fuego(southern Chile/Argentina) which included a boat trip to Cape Horn. They were lead to believe that the GPS system does not work down there.

I did some Google research but have not really found the answer, although the wikipedia GPS entry says that GPS can be received just about everywhere in the world, but does not say where not, and more importantly why-not.

Anyone here know the answer to where GPS does not work & why?

The only limitations on global coverage are for satellite phone, not GPS satellite coverage

Maybe they meant that the maps weren't very good so a GPS-powered navigation device wouldn't work too well? As opposed to GPS actually not working.
