Here's a cheap dashcam, only £39.99 in Lidl today (until they sell out presumably).

So I've bought one. Be aware it needs a Micro SD card (up to 32GB) and none is supplied. I bought a Sandisk 32GB Class 10 one in Tesco for £15.

I can't remember the last time I bought anything with a decent user manual, but this does have one AND it's in real English. Jumping With Joy (Yeah I know, I don't read manuals, but I've had a glance at this one after I couldn't suss the buttons).

It started in default German, so luckily I was able to get into the setup menu and search for the heading Sprache and changed it to English and all has now gone well.

I have yet to see the video quality - there are three choices, 1080p (2hrs 8min on 32GB card), 720p (4hrs) and VGA (6hrs 30min). I've set it on 1080p and the remaining time indicator shows 2hrs 44min as opposed to the above 2hrs 8min). Records in configurable segments 3/5/10 mins, loops when the card is full.

My only gripe right now is the charging cable USB mini/USB with ciggy lighter plug - it's one metre long (short!!). I shall learn how long the battery lasts in due course.

It also does 5mp photos, which seem to be a bit fisheye. I've only taken this one...

EDIT to add... Curse it! I've just realised I didn't remove the lens protecting film, so I presume that's why I'm not too impressed with the quality. Worra plonker!!

I've just been reading dashcam reviews in the Which? mag that popped through the letterbox this morning.

They seem to reckon that most of them are rubbish and the one that stood out from the rest is the NextBase 402G Pro. They did show some sample shots and I have to agree with the report that some of them are tosh based on them.

Embarassed Sorry about that - I took them out to eat my snack and forgot to put them back in! (You can see they're so useless I can't eat with them in!).

Anyway, update.... It switched itself off somewhere after half an hour and I thought the battery had run down so I didn't look at it until I got home. I did (at home) try plugging in my GO520 lead and it seemed to be charging OK. But next Google is for a long USBmini/USB cable.

For comparison, I can't see that it does what the upper end ones do, namely record speed etc, so it will just have date/time stamp.
