I understand your point but knowing the way that traffic flows and people drive, 70mph along a motorway with inactive cameras can be a scary position to be in .... i'm much happy driving with the flow.

But isn't that just like driving on a motorway with no cameras?

Maybe what we need is sensible, consistent limits which are logically and appropriately enforced ....

I hope you're not holding your breath.

Oops. Sorry DennisN.

What I was trying to express, was that the Highway engineers didn't have to invent massive new knowledge to model the flow of traffic. In terms of the computer/mathematics, 'water hammer' in a pipe is the same sort of thing as a 'phantom jam' on a motorway.

I have a problem with a water hammer on my bath hot tap. any advice? Perhaps if I put my snooper against it it will clear? Shocked

Obviously, even if its a ceramic 90 degree tap, close it slowly. That way you can avoid pressure equalisation bypasses.

For the M4/M5 interchange I also believe the opposite is true. I have often experienced congested traffic being diverted on the M4 hard shoulder from the M4/M5 interchange until just before the M32 where those on the hard shoulder have been directed back onto the main carriageway causing major congestion. The only logically reason I can think of for what appears to be irrational management is to use the hard shoulder as a vehicle concentration area in an attempt to the prevent the traffic backing up onto the M5 and impeding those wishing to keep heading south.
