Speed Camera Arsonist Get 2 Year Sentence

A motorist has been jailed for two years for setting fire to a speed camera near the village of Netwon-on-Trent in Lincolnshire. He caused £24,000 of damage.

Security worker Adrian Smith, 46, burnt tyres that he placed at the base of the camera in an attempt to destroy it.

The fixed speed camera caught him speeding the previous day and apparently, he "acted in panic" fearing that he would be banned from driving.

Using automatic number plate recognition, police managed to tracked him to his home. To compound matters, they also found that he was growing cannabis plants in his cellar.

The judge at Lincoln Crown Court said that Smith was not the first person to stand before him for setting fire to a speed camera. He commented: "People need to know that anyone who does that will go to prison. These speed cameras save lives. They moderate people's driving."

Might be worth pointing out that the 2 years was for two offences not just the setting fire to the camera.
