Darrens suggestion (PGPS News, May 30), while an excellent idea, will never catch on.
Speeding fines are so lucrative for local authorities and the police that they would never agree to such a great idea.
Despite the very refreshing views expressed in the Bristol Post recently (http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/North-Somerset-won-t-switch-speed-cameras/story-21156809-detail/story.html) The majority of councils still like the opportunity to raise funds.
Great idea Darren, but sadly not in my life time.

Never say never. I've since been told that The Transport Research Laboratory has been trialling this kind of solution.
But as you say, the loss of revenue would be the killer here. Much like cigarettes, they can't ban them as they need the tax revenue. And smokers don't live as long so they save in pension payments too. _________________ Darren Griffin - Editor |

Darren, you are an old cynic.
Can I suggest that you and I start the "PGPSW Cynics Society" |

Older then me = old :p
Even if we suddenly had the technology to do this tomorrow, how long would the adoption process take?! It would possibly be included in brand new cars but then it could take decades until everyone has one of these cars. Unless they allowed retrospective fitting of the hardware - but then that would probably be more expensive than fitting it at the time of manufacture.
Look how long it took to get the digital switchover done? And some people still have TV's that need a separate box due to their lack of freeview tuner...

Interesting thought - have the two (old and new) running on the road together, a real blast! The oldies like me wouldn't be able to shout and do rage at the new - can you see me, screaming at it like Basil Fawlty? - apoplexy. _________________ Dennis

I, too, thought this was unlikely but here is the Hyundai Genesis. I have previously posted that I think it would be a good idea, faced with the reality I find myself having doubts.
Edit: Now where could they get a good reliable database of speed camera locations? _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
