A gas engineer unexpectedly found himself driving down a short flight of steps when he placed a little bit too much over-reliance on his sat-nav.

He was happily driving his company van down Falmouth Street in Oldham, when his sat-nav reportedly gave him a direction to turn into an alleyway. It turns out that said alleyway ended relatively abruptly with a flight of four steps.

It could of course be argued that if he was going fast enough he would have cleared the steps James Bond style, but it turns out that his driving style was a tad more sedate than 007's.

A resident of the street, Diane Lamb, who has lived there for 30 years, said she has seen several similar incidents of this kind where vehicles are left hanging on the steps.

She commented, "It would be really easy to stop people driving through if we had some bollards to stop drivers thinking it’s a cut-through."

Apparently there is a parallel alley at the back of her house where bollards have been put in place because of the exact same problem.

This is what happens when drivers don't look further than the end of their bonnets. Fair enough follow your sat-nav, that's what we've all got them for, especially if you're in an unfamilier location but it's no excuse for not looking and using common sense. Confused

Hmm, possibly some dodgy reporting there.

If you look on Google streetview HERE, there are a couple of alleyways that go eastwards UP steps from Falmouth Street, but they are all obvious.

There's another path in the same direction at the southern end of Falmouth St and that does have a bollard at the Falmouth St end.

NONE of those are marked as roads or tracks on the Google/TeleAtlas maps.

The only path off Falmouth St that is marked on Google maps, is on the other side of the road, and that has high black iron gates across it.

I think you will find he was intending to travel TOWARDS Falmouth St and turned right from Estate St, at the end of the alley there are 4 steps.
Poor reporting and even worse driving
