Staffordshire Speed Camera Trial Catches 14,000 Drivers

Just one set of average speed cameras has clocked up nearly £1.5 million in fines from almost 14,000 drivers over the three years of its "experimental" operation.

The cameras cost £843,000 to install and were set up when Staffordshire County Council reduced the speed limit from 70mph to 60mph.

The fines go to the government treasury and not the county council.

It's reported that motorists were given an amnesty and not fined for the first 6 months after the cameras were erected to give regular users of the A38 a chance to become familiar with the cameras.

The average speed cameras are situated on a three-mile section of dual carriageway between Birmingham and Lichfield on the A38.

A spokesman for Staffordshire County Council commented: "We have some of the safest roads in the country, which is something we are very proud of and have worked hard to achieve. We have recorded a number of fatal and serious collisions on this stretch of road in past years and are pleased to say that since the measures have been introduced, no accidents have resulted in a fatal or serious injury."

Overall, reported accidents are down by two-thirds on the stretch which is between Bassetts Pole, near Sutton Coldfield, and Weeford Island, near Lichfield.
