I'm on windows 7 64, with around 30 Mbps broadband.

I've been updating my maps for three hours now, but I find the Express panel a bit ambiguous.

As instructed at the beginning , I restarted my device. The panel telling me how to do this didn't disappear, so I closed it manually.

I now have, starting at the top -

A box saying "updates in progress, with a green bar halfway along a grey bar.

A narrow yellow strip saying "the device must be restarted " etc. a red box at right " restart instruction".

"Updates in progress. Install all"

Map update and software update bands, with a green bar moving along a grey band about once a second.

Is all this normal, or hasn't it started yet? The main problem, for me, is that there's no progress indicator of any sort

Well Express will update sofware (if needed) before updating maps, but I'm unclear from your description as to what's happening.

However since a software update wouldn't normally take this long I suspect that you now need to disconnect, reboot your device so the software will update, then reconnect Confused

I guess you're unable to post a screenshot?

You would though see progress if something was happening, the percentage figure would be increasing and the time decreasing as the green bar moves across the screen??

Thanks for your reply.

That's the bit I wasn't getting on mine, until about 5 minutes before it finished. Instead I had the narrow yellow strip saying "the device must be restarted " etc. and a red box at right " restart instruction".

And I didn't get the messages underneath the details of the updates. I had a greyed out "you need to restart your device".

However, it finally finished after nearly four hours.

I can only assume I should have waited for the box with the restart instructions to clear by itself, rather than using the "X" to close it.

I've now let the battery run down, and re-inserted it into my laptop. I had to open Garmin Express myself, despite having the "automatically open box ticked. It also told me I needed to insert my device, so I did it again - I think it may be a dodgy USB socket - my laptop's nearly four years old.

GE now told me that updates were available, and I should install them. When I did so, I got the time message in that strip, and also a red circling icon against the progress bar I hadn't had last time.

After a few minutes it finished.

I've now removed the unit again, and put it into a different USB socket. On opening Garmin express, it tells me no updates are available.

So, hopefully, all's well that ends well!

My full Europe maps can take anything from 3 to 4 hours to update and that's on a meagre 6.5Mbps BB connection.

The actual download speed is nowhere near my theoretical max so I guess the bottleneck is at Garmin's end.

If the problem was at Garmin's end then people on 63mbs connections would not get a much faster download time - well we do get a much shorter download time - it is most likely to be due to limitations in the local network going through the exchange to the next level up of connections.

Both of those are possible causes of slow downloads - I hadn't taken account of it being Saturday morning when I started.

Like it says - you can walk away and leave it to do its thing.

having said that, I still do a mouse wiggle every now and again just to stop the PC going to sleep.

That can indeed cause problems, particularly with some PCs that shut down their USB ports Very Happy

Worth switching off any power saving measures while updating maps IMO Wink

Except mine wasn't saying that until about 5 minutes before it finished. Until then, the narrow band had a message "the device must be restarted " etc. and a red box at right " restart instruction".

You may just have missed it as it also comes up right at the beginning, it's easy enough to miss when you're concentrating on assimilating the rest of it Wink

It's possible, though it was the message in the position where the countdown should have been which was part of my original question. I'll just have to wait until the next update to see what happens.
