Hi Guys

I went thru 1 stretch at 85-88mph, the lines were painted on the road and the camera was overhead however there was no speed limit displayed, are the cameras only active when the speed limit is displayed or are they always active?

I've never sped on the M1 before hence a bit worried, was driving a car unfamilar to me and made a stupid mistake! I normally do 70-75mph and its always been fine on those stretches.

Many thanks

This is one of the long-standing discussions about variable speed zones....
i.e. "Are the cameras always active, or only when a reduced limit is in force?".

I think it is safe to say they always WERE switched off when the speed limit was not being reduced.

But some people then said they were ON, but set to only trigger at a very high speed.

Then, over the last year or two, we have read several reports from police or highways agency bods, who said they were going to switch them on at a "normal" sort of speed (75-77), but I don't think we ever got a definitive idea of whether they were just bluffing!

I seem to remember a recent post by someone saying that they had been flashed on the M25, while no speed limit was being displayed.

I've found it Here.

Edited to add link.

At the weekend (Saturday evening) The gantry camera on the northbound carriageway of the M1 just north of Junc 8 was flashing, with no speed shown on the gantry display.

It was flashing so much, that I was wondering if it was faulty. But it was double flashing each time. But going off every 2 or 3 seconds. Probably because no one takes any notice of these unless they are lit.
