An out of date satnav may have been the cause of a partial train derailment in Pennsylvania.

A truck was been driven over rail tracks and, although the train driver spotted him and slammed on his brakes, three engines and three freight cars were derailed, also causing damage to truck trailer.

Nobody on the train was injured, but the truck driver was taken to hospital for evaluation of a head injury.

A spokesman for the local emergency services commented "What happened, is the driver – not familiar with the area – was relying on his GPS to get to get him to Avonmore, his next stop was Avonmore."

He added, "The road here was originally the road that went to Avonmore, but it has been closed for years. A GPS unit wasn’t giving the right information, and he thought he was heading in the right direction."

" A GPS unit wasn’t giving the right information, and he thought he was heading in the right direction.”"

I suspect the GPS unit was showing exactly the right information regarding location, but the map was out of date. Not unusual, maps are always out of date. Paper maps are out of date. Just another excuse to blame GPS when GPS is not at fault.

Driver error as usual.

Fortunately for him.

As train driver I can only ask "Was there anything inside the idiots skull worth evaluating?"

Of course the answer is NO, you only need to look at YouTube to show what contempt the Yanks have for the Railroad. Rolling Eyes

Surely the collision happened because the truck driver drove his vehicle onto the rail crossing while there was an oncoming train? That's driver error, and nothing to do with an out of date satnav map.
