Spoke to one of the people I deliver to today and was informed that the A336 from the roundabout to New Inn Road, Cadnam Hants(see map)has been reduced from 40mph to 30 mph, nothing wrong there you think, until you realise that the only speed limit signs heading east are on the roads approaching the roundabout, and there are no signs telling anyone about the new speed limit. To cap it all the locals contacted the council and were told that they did not have to put any more signs up and that the Police would be setting up mobile sites along this road sometime in the future. As far as my TT is concerned the speed limit is still 40 so I am assuming that other satnavs would show the same.

Are there street lights on that stretch of road?

If so, that is why they don't have to use repeater signs. As I understand it, if there is street lighting then it is 30mph, unless the signs display differently.

Oldboy
I'm not talking about repeater signs I'm talking about normal speed limit signs or the ones they put up saying speed limit changed. As for the street lights it must have been ok for a 40 mph limit

If there are streetlights less than 200m/183yds apart then the limit is 30mph unless otherwise signed. It's illegal to put up repeaters in 30mph zones. The "New 30mph limit..." sign is optional so often not used as it has to be removed after 6months.

From what you say, the initial signs that must be shown are there correctly. Legally it sounds like they have everything they have to do. I'm not saying I agree though.

I often wonder if these changes are in response to the same locals complaints about speeders.

There are quite a few 40mph roads where street lights would dictate otherwise.

As above, all they have to do is remove the 40 signs and the road becomes 30 by default.

As you say 'sneaky'.

I feel more for the people of Lyndhurst or the villages the other side of the M27 who "know" its a 40mph limit who drive towards Southampton, miss the 30mph signs the other side of the roundabout and drive along merrily at 38 thinking they are under the limit.

theripper, I don't know the area so I have been looking at StreetView in Googlemaps. If you are saying that the road signs at 50.920372, -1.580399 & 50.916772, -1.561541 have been changed from 40mph to 30mph, unless the street lighting has been improved inbetween these signns, it looks like repeater signs should be erected.

Perhaps the locals should campaign to have big "30" roundels painted on the road surface at the starts of the zone also.

Using Oldboys spacing information, despite local street lighting at the A31 roundabout and at the junction with New Inn Road there are only a few few street lights fixed to telegraph/power poles in that stretch and they appear to be spaced at more than 200m apart.

However, although it is an "A" road, it is clearly a residential road and I am surprised that it was ever anything other than a 30 zone in the first place, especially with such poor road lighting.

But you are correct, if the the Powers that Be wanted to improve safety more than they wanted to raise revenue, they could do a lot more to let everybody know that the speed has been reduced.

I'm confused. Do These these road signs from New Inn Road onto the A336 say NSL -60mph?

What a muddle!

Yes
As the diagonal is made of stripes, I understand that to mean 'end of weigh restriction' - and the A336 was at that time 40mph.

Thanks Oldboy

Embarassed At least I live in Spain. No idea what M8TJT's excuse will be though.

Seriously, how confusing is that? I know that ignorance is no defense in law but it would be so easy to confuse that sign with the NSL one and cruise along in a 30 zone at 60.

Thinking about it a wee bit more, I think that we have something similar here.

I think that those signs may say "End of Restrictions", so that is all restrictions that are in place up to that point: Speed, Weight, Height, etc.

If there was a Pictogram (i.e. 40, 2,5t or 2.7m) behind the diagonal lines it would be specific to that particular restriction.

EDIT, NoteToSelf - Time to brush up on the Highway Code methinks.

I recently travelled that road and was surprised at the changes in speed limits , not only the 40 to 30 but after new inn rd towards southampton has changed from national speed limit to 50 . There are repeaters in that area .

I do know that between the motorway and the 1st roundabout has been a subject of interest because the local bike boys have been using it as a racetrack . So much so that the highways agency have now put a fence in the middle of the road aproaching both roundabouts so that you cannot see traffic already on the roundabout.
