This might be the last time this occurs.

I followed the link and the link from that... and liked the line
Quote:
A leap second occurs at the same instant throughout the world, when the familiar 'six pips' radio time signal gains an extra pip before the long pip marking the hour, to become a 'seven pip' signal. So, the minute containing the leap second becomes a 61-second minute.

But nowhere could I find WHEN they add the extra second.
Anyone know, is it midnight?

If the second is added to the 30th June, it must be an extra one so it will either be at midnight BST delaying the start of July 1st by a second, or more likely midnight GMT (or whatever they call it these days).
Do you believe Wikipedia?

I expect NatWest's computers will go down again!

Edit: More interestingly, Nav2 devices have been through this before; I wonder if TT are ready for any Nav3 impact?

EDIT -

From that screen grab, it says
Quote:
Screencapture of the UTC-derived Central Standard Time clock from time.gov during the UTC leap second December 31, 2008, 23:59:60

Does that help in anyway?, I don't understand UTC's, v BST's

EDIT, EDIT - UTC = GMT

The whole point is that 23:59:60 UTC does not normally exist. It goes from 23:59:59 to 00:00:00 And UTC is prettu much the same as GMT (Which is what they are synchronising). The actual time depends on your time zone, so in UK at the moment we are GMT+1 so the extra second will be at 00:00:60 BST

Edit. There's a damn echo round here!

From the above link:
Quote:
Leap seconds are inserted at the end of the last day in June or December. When that is the case, UTC ticks from 23:59:59 to 23:59:60 before reverting to 00:00:00

Edit: So surely it will be at 00:59:60 BST?

I've just remembered something (not completely off topic), probably wrong but happy to be shown the error of my ways.

I was once told that the time 23:59:59 lasts for two seconds because the time 00:00:00 can not exist due to potential errors/accidents/missed appointments i.e. Is that Wednesday or Thursday. So 23:59:59 goes straight to 00:00:01 to avoid any confusion.

Must remind myself to watch the clock at 23:59:59 UTC tomorrow. Sad

nts- Need an Emoticon for "Sad" as in Anorak not just as in Unhappy.

Yes of course it is. All these missing seconds is getting me all in a tizzy.

@Ali. The millitary (when I was there anyway) ignore the :00 minutes at midnight so it goes from 23:59 to 00:01 just to save confusion Shocked Shocked

I understand from the TT forum that customer support is blaming the leap second for the problems with sirfstar3 devices over the last few days. But I think the problem started before that?

And isn't it strange that both my non TomTom Sirf Star 3 device times are exactly synchronised with my Radio clock (to better than a second) and neither of them give a tracking position error even with 'Lock to road' switched off
Sounds like more baloney from TT. Strange also that most of the posts regarding positional error seem to start with the line 'Since updating..... Rolling Eyes

Not sure about NatWest's - but a lot did fall over - Leap second bug cripples Linux servers at airlines

There was 5 months warning of the leap second addition. I'd have thought this would be basic computer training stuff?
