King Canute is alive and well in Cyprus

THE HOUSE Interior Committee discussed a bill yesterday which would allow police to prosecute anyone discovered importing, distributing or using GPS systems on which place names in the north appear in their re-named Turkish form.

According to the Committee head, Yiannos Lamaris such systems have been imported and distributed. Lamaris also warned that people should be careful not to download or use such systems.

The bill would give the police the right to prosecute anyone they discover importing, distributing and using such devices.

“It’s complicated (because) if it’s considered a crime to use these programmes... it means that everyone using a phone with a navigation system is unwittingly guilty,” said Lamaris.

Lamaris added that they had decided to ask the relevant ministries and bodies to look into the issue
