Just tried to update my son's TT Go Classic which was a "hand me down" from myself a few years ago when I upgraded to an XL, it says the Go is now at end of life and is no longer supported AT ALL by TomTom....not even by email, yes I know its old tech but has been working perfectly apart from the alternate route selection whilst on a mapped journey.

As far as I am concerned I am annoyed and perplexed that TT deem to just drop any kind of customer help when the product reaches a certain age, I can understand updates and software not being supported online, but not even email support?

Where is all the profit going....certainly not into customer service for sure.

I was recently considering upgrading all three TT we have (Go, XL, XL ) to one of the newer models, but now....forget it TomTom....I'll be off to Garmin very soon, this weekend in fact (I was updating for my son as he is off on a trip next week) so now it looks like he will be using a shiney new Garmin, and now also my wife and I will too!

If TT cannot be bothered to answer or even consider answering a technical query from a loyal customer, then up your TT, we are off................

Unbelievable!

In fact, you still can get updated applications AND maps for legacy devices.

For technical help, well, there are a bunch of knowledgeable people here ready to assist......

In fact I attached the GO and logged on and it said I could update the Go, but when I tried at the end of the download I got the message that the device was no longer supported it was "end of life".

Of course help is available here, but your missing my point, TomTom are not interested in helping customers with older machines, and they should be, thier loss though quite literally.

No, you are missing MY point .......

You can still get applications and maps for the device, just no support since it is an older device.

So, you seek assistance for tech questions elsewhere, like here.

Ceasing support for older hardware/software is not limited to TomTom, they all do that.

And this is far from unusual. Companies have to have draw a line in the sand at some point. It's simply uneconomic to maintain full support for every device they make. The Classic is, in electronics terms, a very old device now.

And, to TomTom's credit, they support their devices for far longer than most. Ask a Navman user how they feel when a two year old device is effectively abandoned, no map updates, no software updates, nothing. Now that is abandoning a device.

Most companies do when they go out of business! Wink

But Kodak up until the last still supported my Kodak pro digital camera even after stopping production for about 8 years!

And the online applications (updates) cannot be loaded onto my GO as it is "end of life" according to TT.....it downloads the app and then before it installs I get the message that the machine is no longer supported.

Yes I can buy new maps for it.....I would not think TT would stop a lucrative new map policy for old machines, just the free support Confused

To be honest, I never get all this `support` stuff.

As a user of lots of technology items and an old TTGo700 being one of them, I have never contacted the number on a box to ask for help.

Either im just lucky, or i self learn how to do things or read good forums like this one Wink

I still own a Classic GO, which my nephew is currently using, and this has the latest navcore (7.903), that is applicable to the device. A new map is purchased every 2-3 years to keep it reasonably up to date.

This is the same navcore series that my 910 uses, and in both cases they still do 'what they said on the original tin'.

To me, the message is saying that TT no longer is able to offer Support, via Customer Services, not that they have given up on providing software and maps - although there is little point in going higher than a 7.9xx navcore because of the hardware capabilities of the device. The same goes for the 910.

Richard, thank you.....you at least seem to understand my original post.

And if it were not for the fact that this old GO machine had not lost the ability to find an alternate route during a planned route everything would still be hunky dory.

I was merely pointing out the fact I found it (to me) unacceptable that TT no longer even entertain the notion of supporting customers with older machines.

But I fear my consternations were lost in a flurry of community support for TT. Wink

Anyhoo, my son's new Garmin is a cracking little machine.....big screen and a refreshingly new layout of graphics, which will no doubt become as familar as TT's in due course.

I will have to get him to join the Garmin thread community! Laughing

As a couple of pen'orth... Isn't the GO Classic pretty old? Older than my first foray into satnav with the GO300 in 2005?

So being able to get maps for it after over 7 years is pretty good going, wouldn't you say? Well, I would. But even though I had three of the x00 series devices, after all this time I find it hard to remember the tricks for them. TT must have a moderate turnover of staff on their helplines, so they'll gradually lose all the older device experts and training of new staff is a process of diminishing returns - train everybody on the Classic which few people own now? So they have to make a decision to announce that they can't support you in the customer support department. A bit like it takes a specialist nowadays to "support" old cars and motorbikes.

But I'll tell you what. A year or so ago, I had my hands on a Classic for a couple of days and I was knocked sideways by the speed and solid reliability of its performance. Where has all that gone with today's devices?
